Bulgaria in a nutshell
Bulgaria is a country in the Balkans region of Europe, bordered by Romania, Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. It functions as a parliamentary democracy, being a member of the European Union from 2007. The country has a rich history which we will see in this guided tour.
The population of the country is approximately 7, 640, 238. The major ethnic groups in the country are 81% Bulgarians, 9% Roma, 8% Turkish and the remaining 2% minority groups. The per Capita income of Bulgaria is $12, 252. The economy of the country has rapid growth in the last couple of years after Bulgaria joined the European Union. The country is a major producer of electricity in the Balkan’s region. Georgi Parvanov is the present President of the country. He was elected to the presidency in the year 2006. The 28 provinces of the country are headed by a provincial Governor.
Bulgaria has a special geographic significance in the Balkans. The country is a gateway between Europe, Africa and Asia. There are five Trans European corridors which cross through the country. There are 5 official International airports in the country. The Government has planned a new metro in Sofia. Though work in underway, but a large portion of the metro still remains uncompleted.
