MPEG-4 Part 14 or MP4 file format, or as it is formally refered to ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003, is a multimedia container format standard designated as a part of MPEG-4. It is most often used to store digital video and digital audio streams, specifically those defined by MPEG, but can also be employed to store other data such as subtitles and still images.

MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, or MP3 as it is normally called, is a patented digital audio encoding format which uses a form of lossy data compression.
