Homemade Gorilla Suit Costumes

without comments

Gorilla suit costumes are a classic, and it doesn’t matter what you’re dressing up for. A gorilla suit costume is just as appropriate at a science fiction convention as it is at a Halloween party. And new versions of the classic gorilla costume look more realistic than ever.

Making your own gorilla suit costume can be a challenge, but it can be a fun way to spend some time with one of your kids, and it can save you a little bit of money. If you’re handy and like doing craft type stuff, give making your own gorilla suit for Halloween a try.

Your gorilla suit will need arms and a torso, as well as pants. I recommend sweatshirts and sweatpants, in black or gray. You can then attach the fur to the appropriate places on the costume. Get yourself a cool gorilla mask to top it off with, and you’ve got a homemade gorilla costume that can’t be beat.

If you really want to have some fun with a gorilla suit, try emulating some of the early Planet of the Apes movies to see if anyone is nostalgic enough to remember the films and make the connection. If you’ve got some buddies who are also science fiction geeks, you could even have someone dress as Charlton Heston from the movie. If someone is creative and artistic, you could set up your own Statue of Liberty prop so that you can re-enact the end of the original movie. That will really drive the crowd wild.

How to Make an Origami Flower

without comments

Origami is an age old paper folding technique that had originated in Japan but is now known all over the world. The conventional butterflies in Japan are made using this technique during auspicious occasions. They are made of materials that can be made easily folded, more specifically in the shape of a crane. A special origami paper is known as kami which is available for making origami craft work. There are other types too such as the wash origami paper. At times, paper can be made of hemp, wheat, bamboo and rice which can be used for making an origami flower. Preparing origami objects is essentially a group activity. One needs to treat it as such. The activities are easy but the paper needs to be folded in a specific direction, to get the proper figureine. This art usually replicates objects used in real life and make paper shapes of them. Listed below are some flowers that can be made easily just by using Origami:

How to make Lotus-

First take a 6 inch square piece of one sided origami paper. Hold one of the colored sides up and then the paper must be diagonally in the middle. The diagonal must be unfolded again and make a fold for another diagonal. Repeat the procedure of folds and unfolds for the horizontal, mid-lines and vertical lines

One can fold a corner of the paper in the middle, again repeat the procedure, for the remaining three edges. It is usually a small square of the original one, then again fold the corners of this small square in the middle, just by the previously finished method. Again repeat the procedure of folding the corners.

Now one needs to turn the smaller square and can repeat the corner folding procedure from the backside as well. Reach the back of the corner, and pull that flap around to the front. Open the adjacent flaps to avoid damage. The procedure needs to be repeated for the rest of the corners too. This is how one can create an origami flower lotus.

How to Make a Lily-

One needs to take a square shaped origami paper and needs to fold it in the origami balloon base. Make a squash fold and repeat the method for the other three corners. This gives a kite shape to the flower in making

One needs to take the lower edge of the paper on its centerline and it needs to be unfolded as soon as possible. Next, the top corner needs to be folded in the bottom direction and opened it. The folding marks need to be visible clearly.

This is the fold that one must repeat at the edge of the balloon base. This results in asmaller kite over the larger one. A point of the kite needs to be folded and the procedure needs to be repeated to get a diamond shape

Next, the top edges of the “diamond” need to be folded and the procedure needs to be repeated for three more times. Once finished with the folding, the paper needs to be turned upside down.

Then one needs to hold the base of the formed petals in the fingers of a hand and run a pencil along with the thumb of the other hand through the length of the petal. This procedure needs to be repeated to give a curly finish.

So go ahead and make an origami flower today with your neighborhood kids and your own and have a ball!

The Purpose of Tapestry Kits

without comments

Tapestry is an old school form of art, so we could say that one of the main purposes of tapestry kits would be to continue reliving this old but still viable form of art that is made through sewing. Tapestry kits are also meant to sort of fulfill and make full use of the juice of creativity that’s coming out of those who knew how to sew. Tapestry kits typically come with the fabric, the needles, and the thread that one needs to be able to come up with a work of art. Typically, a person could make a wall decor, floor rug, or table mat with the use of one simple tapestry kit.

Some Design Inspirations for Tapestry

Unsure about what the design of a particular tapestry work should be? First off, zero in what the tapestry will be for specifically. Should it be meant as a wall decor? Then the design detail has to be given much importance, and it would really be better if the tapestry would be designed to resemble a sort of portrait that people could really look at as they pass through the wall where it is posted. On the other hand, if it were for a floor rug, one does not need to be super particular about the design details, but a design of vertical lines that implies passage ways would be great.

How to Build a Model Sailboat?

without comments

Constructing a replica of anything can be enjoyable, this is actually an activity that is done by quite a few people who find the pastime satisfying. You may build a model sailboat as part of a larger set or you may build it simply to test it out in real life conditions, either at a lake or in fact in a more confined set up like a swimming pool. Regardless of why you are building a model sail boat the one thing that is most probable is that you may get very inventive with the design and its appearance. This specific design is relatively simple and will not necessitate a great amount of skill, however, if you are naturally good with your hands then this will be to your advantage.

How To Build A Model Sailboat

Required Materials

Scissors

Staple gun

Box cutter

Hand saw

Drill with ¼-inch drill bit

Required Tools

Balsa wood (2 by 4), 8 inches in length

Sandpaper

Waterproof glue

Wood dowel, approximately ¼-inch diameter

Canvas, cotton sheeting or paper which will be used to build the sail.

Instructions

1)To start you will want to create your hull. To do this shave your wood to create the shape of the hull, this will be done by utilizing your box cutter to mould the piece of wood, allowing it to create a point at the end of the wood. You should focus on the sides of the wood also, this will after all be the base of your sail boat. Essentially you should construct an angled shape once you are finished.

2)To give your hull a nice smooth look you will have to sand it thoroughly. This will give it more definition. To get rid of the excessively angled shape you created before you will need to use the sand paper to give it a more rounded edge, this will increase the realism that you may desire.

3)You will now have to drill a hole in your hull, this will be used to install the support mast for the sail. This hole should be in the centre in the hull and should be drilled to a depth of about ½ inch. This will reinforce its structural integrity, though it is a model boat you will want it to sail similarly to the real thing. Additionally, it will look better with a well balanced sail.

4)Make your dowel by cutting it to a length of 6 inches using a hand saw. This should be an accurate cut that is both straight and even. Hence be patient and take the time to get it near perfect.

5)Sand this newly formed dowel making sure that the edges do not have any splinters around it, this may be a nuisance when the boat is being used.

6)You can now install your mast. This will be carried out by putting your wood glue in the hole you previously made within the hull and then pushing the dowel mast into it. You may notice that the glue will spew out while you are affixing the dowel into the hull however, you may just wipe and then allow the parts to dry. Depending on the glue it may take as little as 20 minutes and as much as the whole day to dry. During this period you can go ahead and create your sail.

7)When making the sail you will need to cut your chosen material (paper, canvas or cotton sheeting) into a 4 inch equilateral triangle using scissors hence it should be totally symmetrical. To increase the symmetry use stencils or accurate measurements. Once the sail has been cut out you can add any extra decorative elements to it especially if your glue has not yet set.

8)You can then attach your sail to the dowel mast when it has completely dried. Wrap the sail around the dowel mast so that the edges of the material are not visible.

9)You can then create the rigging for your boat. You will accomplish this by affixing the string to the area where the sail is glued to the mast, for the other end the staple gun will suffice in securing rigging to the hull.

Tips and Warnings

You can put on a keel to give the boat some more realism. You can do this by using a bit of balsa wood cut in the shape of a thin triangle that you may glue to the underside of your boat.

Do not let children use the drills, jigsaw or staple gun even if you are doing this as a family project.

Arts And Crafts – Stamping

without comments

Stamping is a technique in arts and craft where an object, mostly a rubber stamp with some pattern on it, is pressed into ink and then pressed onto something such as a sheet of paper so that the pattern on the stamp is transmitted to the paper. At first stamping was used primarily in business offices for stamping logos and addresses onto documents but more recently craft stamping has become an art form to itself and stamps are now made in countless complex designs and used to decorate objects. Stamping can really add another dimension to different crafts when they are placed properly. For example paper flowers made from tissue paper can be made more elegant and classy by stamping patterns onto the tissue paper you will use to make the flowers. You can furthermore use the stamps to beatify parts of the flowers after they have been made.

Rubber stamping is also a good method of unifying various items. If for instance you are using two different items or two different colors for wedding favors, you can use a rubber stamp to embellish them and unify them so that they don’t seem to be disjointed and detached. Stamping is furthermore a good way of personalizing your wedding invitations, thank you cards, etc.

There are so many things that can be done with stamping to create different effects; other than using different designs you can use dark paper and light ink to do the stamping. The contrast is really outstanding and effective and looks really good.

Craft stampings are additionally useful for themed occasions and various seasons; you can use stamps to appropriately decorate different items for Christmas parties, 4th of July, Halloween and various other holiday events. Stamping is also useful for baby showers, bridal parties, birthday parties, etc. Regular items and decorations can be made much more appropriate and effective by using a rubber stamp to decorate them.

Using different sorts and colors of dyes can add a whole new dimension to your craft stamping. Mixing the stamping technique with other elements can also be very effective. You can use chalk, inks, paints, fibers and an assortment of other embellishments to enhance your various crafts.

You can make your own stamps if you are so inclined, out of the type of gum used to make erasers, or you can purchase the stamps you need from a variety of stores; be sure to buy an assortment of patterns and sizes so that you can experiment with many different designs. If you need a stamp for one time use and want to put your own design into it, you can carve the designs you require into a potato and use it as your stamp.

Stamping is a very good way of keeping children busy and teaching them a useful new skill that they can use to enhance their own artwork and projects. Experiment with different mediums; instead of using just paper for your stamping you can also use cloth, or woodblocks.
