Medical Record Scanning to PDF Files
Medical records scanning is a process to convert patient medical files to PDF format. PDF is a standard image file format that is supported by free PDF readers available on the internet and electronic medical records systems. Medical records can be scanned directly into a PDF file or the images are converted afterwards using document conversion software.
Document conversion software included a process calledOCRor Object Character Recognition. The advantage of this process is that the files are text searchable. Another process is PDF file compression using technologies like JBIG compression. JBIG compression reduces the file size by as much as 60%.
PDF files also include security features such as encryption and password protection. Though PDF files are the best option for scanning paper-based medical records, they are not the best option for scanning x-rays. DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is the standard for scanning x-rays. The files are encoded in JPEG 2000 which makes the files smaller in size than a standard PDF.
